Might be more than some will need, but GREAT for our family.
By L. Field
This sleeping mat is a full on 5 season rated self inflating mat, the very same used by polar expeditions and winter mountain climbers. It might surprise you then to find that we are a normal family who think we are being really edgy if we go off season and stay at a wild camping type campsite where there are composting toilets and a stand pipe instead of hot power showers and flushing loos! So why on earth have we chosen these? Well, for a start, there is nothing worse than waking up cold. We had heard that the problem with airbeds was that the cold from the ground gets into the air space and basically makes you cold in the night. We knew the self inflating mats were a lot warmer because they are foam (and these also have a reflective insulation layer to keep cold in the ground and warmth reflected back to your body rather than being lost into a cold air gap) but I do like a soft mattress and I couldnt see how some of the thinner self inflating mattresses could possibly be comfortable. We laid on some sample ones in a shop (5cm depth and under) and I honestly wondered how anyone could possible sleep on them, they were like sleeping on a concrete floor in my humble opinion, but each to their own! Then we found that Multimat do these 10cm deep ones, MUCH more like the comfort level you'd expect from an airbed but with all the benefits of a lighter, smaller sleeping mat which is warmer at night. Multimat mats also velcro firmly together all the way down each side and if you measure out with newspapers the size of most single self inflating mats, you will find you would be hard pushed to actually sleep comfortably on one if you want to do luxury things like, er, turn over in your sleep without falling off the side! Velcroing 2 together means hubby and I can sleep side by side without one of us ending up in the gap and the velcro system means no fiddly joining straps or catches to dig into you. But, we also have a toddler son too and were honestly quite concerned about keeping him warm because nothing causes him to wake frequently like being cold does and lets face it, no-one enjoys a camping holiday if everyone is tired from a rubbish nights sleep and waking up cold and stiff and sore from your hips and shoulders digging into the ground. So, it felt like a good investment in making sure we all slept well by buying 3 of these nice thick warm mats, velcroing all 3 of the mats together and co-sleeping with our son with plenty of room to move in the night without anyone falling down gaps or finding that the mats drifted apart in the night. On colder nights we put our son between us inside our double sleeping bag so he gets both of our body heat and on warmer nights we put him to the side of me (Mum) in his own sleeping bag when he doesn't need to borrow so much of our body heat. The under side finish means the mats don't slide around on the floor and the upper surface finish of the mat means your sleeping bag doesn't slip around either. They inflate fast and deflate fast due to the two valves. I basically take them out of their bags when we arrive and lay them on the roof of the car with the valves open and by the time the rest of the gear is out of the car, they are inflated and ready to go in the tent once it is up! Yes, these are not the cheapest mats on the market, but shop around on the internet and we got ours for less than half the RRP making it cheaper than some of the more basic ones in their range. They are also not the lightest smallest mats either so if this is a major consideration or you are back packing a long distance carrying all your gear then these may not be for you, but, aside from this, I can really find no fault at ALL with these and they are totally ideal for our family. I must say that I did not find Multimats website was the easiest to negotiate around and so my husband called them instead with our questions and he spoke to a REALLY helpful staff member who was clearly someone who actually USES the products herself and cared about making sure we got the right product for our family rather than someone who was there because they were being paid and had learnt the sales script. We are really impressed. Basically, very happy campers!

Excellent Product
By Power User
Highly recommend this. Expensive but worth it. It sits more than 2 inches off the ground, when fully inflated and really buffers you from the cold. I would say this is a must for fall and winter camping, but even in summer camp, it feels so much more comfortable than those thin air mats. I have even stopped bothering with the big air beds now because it is comfortable enough as is. You do need to blow into it to get it up to the firmness you desire, if you like a firmer mat, like I do. It wont inflate to a firm level automatically. But its made tough and I never feel like I am going to blow it up by blowing air in manually.
