I bought this pack of fire steels to use on a camping trip where I wanted to introduce my young son and his friends to some outdoor pursuits that didn't involve a PSP, Nintento DS or similar, such as fire lighting and knife use.For that purpose, they are perfect. You can scrape the magnesium rods using the provided striker or the back of a bush knife to produce ultra hot sparks that, if carefully directed, will light tinder in most conditions. There is a knack to it (loads of videos on YouTube will show you how) but one tip that I would say is this - pop some cotton wool balls and a small pot of vaseline in your backpack and you'll have a kindling material that is easy to light and that keeps going long enough to get the fire going - simply wipe one end of the cotton wool ball in the vaseline and direct the sparks to the dry, fluffy end to get it going quickly.I hope you have found this review useful.

I bought these little firestarters as I thought the other better-kown branded items were overpriced - I'd seen some for around 20 pounds for a single striker, so three for under a fiver seemed a good deal.After a quick play with them the quality seems reliable, and the supplied striker works well, however, a knife works equally well too - be careful though, you can take the edge off your knife quite easily. I haven't tested these out in the cold and wet (when they will be needed most) so this is only a partial review and I'll update it if field-testing proves them inadequate. However, based on their performance on a normal overcast day, I'd say these are just as good as other branded equivalents, and the price is much more attractive.
