By I. R. Saunders
We recently bought this for a holiday in France and Germany for ourselves and our 4 children. After a week and half in the tent, in both sun and rain, we've experiences both the benefits and drawbacks of a budget family dome. The first benefit, is, obviously the size. My sister has a 3 bedroom dome tent and the central space is tiny compared to the Skandika. There's plenty of room here for everyone, while it's certainly not enough for 10 people, we fitted snugly with the six of us - two to a room is about right if you're using airbeds, though the bigger bedroom was okay when we slept 3 boys in there. Call it a realistic 7 man tent - still, pretty good though and the central space is great for a sit down chat inside at night. On the same topic, though, the first and most annoying drawback rears its ugly head - the hobbit-sized doorway. The pictures give the impression that the clearance on the door is only slightly lower than the nearly-2m clearance in the central dome: it's not. The door is about 4 ½ feet at it's highest point, which means the roof from the door into the dome slopes considerably and adults have to walk in and out of the tent bent double to avoid brushing the roof with their heads and bringing down a steady flow of water on a wet day - an impossible thing to avoid. Also, the poles for the doorway that are detailed on the pictures here are a lie, they are not taller than the door - they are the same height. When we had them up, the ensuing 4ft high shelter was perfect for the 3-6 year old kids that played around the tent (and subsequent it garnered the moniker `the burrow' - a name which has stuck) but it was impossible for an adult to enter that way, so we sort of snuck in sideways for the first day and didn't use the poles again after that, even in the rain - they're a joke. That brings me to the next drawback, the nature of a dome is the you will, inevitably knock your head on the roof and the 3000 weather weave (best to get 5000 or more) lets the water flow in pretty fast when you do - so we did experience a few leaks in the wet weather both from the roof and from where the kids had rolled up against the side of the bedrooms in the night. Lastly, there's the condensation issue, whether due to the lack of vents, or the fact that the groundsheet isn't sown in, every morning the inside of the tent was dripping with condensation and it would take most of a dry day for it clear. In summary - a fantastic, spacious, budget tent, that's great for the kids but will still leave an adult bending double most of the time and isn't so good in the wet. It's definitely not worth the £400 rrp, but £200 or under is about right for the quality of this budget beastie.**Update October 2012**We've had the tent three summers now and have discovered a few things. First of all, when we were forced to camp one night during a severe weather warning in Wales, the tent survived winds that shredded my brother's family dome. We did have to sow a couple of guys back on afterwards, but it proved pretty durable. The door poles, which were useless at first, have turned out quite useful on the window covers which can be pegged out to make a small shelter for the window vent. This is essential for airing out the tent in hot weather without filling it with bugs (that do tend to congregate under the dome). So, two years on, the kids still love it, it's still going strong and we're a bit more settled in it - the condensation remains a problem but the tent has survived some pretty serious downpours and storms. Also, it does tend to draw interest from passers-by with it's large interior dome.

By Harry Bentley
I got this tent because a big group of us were going camping in Edinburgh during the festival.Pros:Firstly this is a BIG tent, larger than my room in student halls, the communal area is big enough to fit another 10 people in if you wanted to push the sleeping capacity higher for some reason. Its more than sturdy - peg it properly and it'll remain firm in big winds. Its also solidly WATERPROOF, capitalised for importance. This thing survived 13 days of scottish summer without letting a drop in.The 3 sleeping compartments are detachable, as they clip onto the inside of the outer shell. This means you can take them down for more living space, or just to empty and clean them without taking down the whole tent.Cons:Even though this is a 5-star review, there are understandable things you have to deal with.Number one of which is that this tent is HEAVY. One man cannot move this when its packed in the bag. We discovered two men can move it a few meters with serious hand-pain.If you don't have a car, you'll probably need to taxi this thing around. Also because the tent is so huge, its a little hard to take down and roll-up. Mainly because for us it had rained, and the outer shell has pretty much doubled in weight.Summery:In any case. If your going camping with a big group, for even with a small group who like a bit of space, this tent is a great choice; it survives the rain, theres window-flaps for the sun, and its sturdy in the wind.I reccomend it, just have a plan (or something with wheels) to deal with moving it.

This tent is huge and easy to put up. We use it when we go fund-raising and it houses both the animals and us, still leaving plenty of room, to relax in the evening inside out of the rain.
