4Warm, spacious, comfortable
By KS
I bought the Everest Down sleeping bag to take trekking in the Altai mountains in Mongolia in September/October. I was worried about being cold during the night, and I selected this as it claimed to allow comfortable sleeping down to -12C. As it turned out, I was right to worry about the cold, as most mornings when I woke up the inside of the tent was covered with frost and on several occasions my drinking water bottle contained only ice. Despite this, I slept as well as I have ever done under canvas, which I suspect was mainly down to this sleeping bag. Admittedly, I took other precautions against the cold: I slept in thermals and a fleece, a hat and scarf, and used a silk liner inside the bag, as well as sleeping on a slightly padded mat and covering myself with my coat. Whether I would have been as comfortable without these I doubt, but the sleeping bag itself was warm and spacious, allowing me to twist and turn without getting wrapped up.I also used this sleeping bag on several nights inside gers (yurts), in which a stove is lit in the evening and gradually dies down overnight. While it was too warm when I went to bed - unsurprisingly, as the room was probably over 30C - it was possible to lie in the unzipped sleeping bag and gradually close it as the room cooled. The sleeping bag packed down much smaller than similar ones which my companions were using, which was particularly useful when travelling with pack horses. It fitted fairly easily into its compression bag, although I found I had to roll it twice each morning, once to squeeze the air out and then neatly to fit in into its sack. The small pocket in the neck of the bag turned out to be very useful for storing camera batteries overnight so they didn't get too cold and lose their charge. With sensible use, this sleeping bag can allow you a comfortable night's sleep in both normal and below-freezing conditions.
