I wanted a small portable fridge that I could take with me in my car on holiday to keep food and drink cold when travelling from place to place. The Tropicool is exactly what I was looking for. It works equally well on 12V in the car or 230V AC mains if I stop overnight somewhere, and it's small enough to fit easily in the boot of the car (a Golf), still leaving plenty of room for a couple of suitcases. It has a variable temperature control which goes in seven discreet steps indicated by a row of LEDs on the front panel. This allows the temperature to be set from about 11 degrees C down to around 1 degree - just above freezing. When first plugged in the Tropicool makes quite a bit of noise from the fan, but this only lasts for about an hour until the temperature nears its target value. It then switches to 'Eco' mode, the power is reduced from about 60W to 12W and the fan becomes virtually silent. My only slight gripe is that the 12V power lead has a non-standard plug, so that if it were lost or got broken one would have to go back to the manufacturer for a replacement. Ideally I'd like to make up my own lead to the right length (and carry a spare).
