Product Description

The First Need XL water purifier produces 100% safe water from all water sources except Salt water. All natural water purification, no chemicals and no iodine taste. The process removes Pathogenic Cysts (e.g. Cryptosporidia, Giardia) Diseases, Bacteria, Viruses and Chemical Contaminants ( e.g. pesticides & herbicides) Aesthetic Contaminents (e.g. foul taste, odour, colour) Dirt & sediment.

The Water Purifier filters between 600 - 800 litres depending on water quality. The cleaner the water source to start with the more water will be filtered. (Refill cartridges are available) Each canister is sealed to prevent contact with contaminants.

The water purification filter fits onto a water bottle the water can either be pumped or filtered by gravity. The unit has a fast flow rate and end of use indicator.

Recommended for: All those who need to purify a lot of water as it is very economical and for anyone that cannot use iodine.

So what do our instructors think? Here Jason from Woodland Ways Bushcraft & Survival writes:

"I discovered these pumps just before heading out to the Jungles of Borneo in April 2008, what a find! Not looking forward to the taste of iodine for some months when I tested this kit it was unbelievable to be drinking safe water from the streams with no bitter taste. We now use these pumps whenever we are undertaking water purification and rely on them when travelling out in the Sahara on our annual expedition to make safe the water from the wells. But don't just think about drinking water also, these make the water safe to treat wounds, wash, clean teeth and food!"

Advantages: No chemical after taste, and the flow rate is exceptional.

Disadvantages: As with all quality pieces of kit these do not come cheap, and they are also bulkier than others, but we feel the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, and if you are travelling with groups this device makes things so much easier because of its size.

5First Needs water filter review
By iloveflapjacks
Me and my girl friend have just returned from three and a half months in India, we took this filter with us and its probably the most useful thing I've ever taken away! We Easily saved 650 plastic bottles by doing so!! When you compare the cost of water per litre from the pump and the cost of bottled water some where like India its pretty much the same, and if you use the replacement filter next time then the cost of the water is nearly free!It worked absolutely faultlessly and is light weight. Its a bit hard to say but I wouldn't be surprised if we got more then the standard 700 litres out of it. If you take it away for an extended period of time then it might be a good idea to take a really really small bottle with some bleach in it, after a couple of weeks use the filter itself can get a grubby, but its really easy to take to pieces and wash and put back together. There is no indicator on the filter to say when its finished, and the instructions are very very vague as to how you can tell, i suspect that it is when the pump feels like there is some sort of vacume inside it and you'll find it hard to pump. I forced my way past this and then we were both ill for a day!You can filter water into any plastic bottle, we just bought bottles of water and then refilled these.

5The best ever, no doubts!

I'M BACK INTO THIS REVIEW MAY 2012 SIMPLY TO ASSURE ANYONE THINKING OF GETTING AN EASY TO USE AND TOTALLY SAFE WATER PURIFYING SYSTEM THAT THIS REALLY IS THE BEES KNEES. IT IS MUCH SPEEDIER AT FILLING A BOTTLE THAN ANY OTHER I'VE TRIED - ROUGHLY 15-20 SECS PER LITRE.I'D REINFORCE MY VIEW (AS BELOW) THAT YOU ARE BETTER OFF TAKING 1 LITRE+ SEE-THROUGH STRONG CLEAR PLASTIC BOTTLES WITH SECURE SCREW TOPS SIMPLY BECAUSE IT IS EASY TO SEE THE WATER LEVEL AS YOU PUMP AND FILL.GIVEN THAT MOST TUMMY BUGS AND INFECTIONS COME VIA CONTAMINATED WATER THIS IS POTENTIALLY A LIFE-SAVER, AND DEFINITELY A HOLIDAY-SAVER. Steve Riches, Northampton, UK.************************************************************************************************************************************************************I am thinking of buying this product but before I do I need to know that the aluminium water bottle pictured as part of the set actually comes with it. I understand that these bottles are expensive and may need to be purchased separately from elsewhere, however this is not clear from the information provided.Secondly, if any users of this device would post some reviews of how it has been in rigorous use I'm sure it'd be of great help to any potential purchasers like me. For instance, how dirty does the water have to be before the filter gets clogged well before that stated 600 litre processing limit? Can the pump simply pump water into any water bottle...or does it fit only onto the make of aluminium bottle that's pictured?Clearly, as I do not yet own this item I have played fair and given it 5 stars, because I must give a rating of some sort to be able to post this comment! Steve Riches.MARCH 2011...Just managed to get back into this to say that this is a wonderful piece of kit. We managed to get one (including filter) for around £80, and took it round Thailand, peninsula Malaysia and Sarawak and many times needed to use it to make good some filthy or potentially polluted water in some difficult locations, eg. with hill tribes in Thailand and up-river in Sarawak. It worked perfectly, the water tastes excellent, and we had no tummy upsets at all. You'll make life easier for yourself if you carry water bottles where the outlet from the purifier (on the bottom of the main cylinder) fits easily, and I found the good quality rigid see-through polypropelene ones easier to handle than the metal ones because you could watch the level of water inside as you pumped the handle. My advice is to test it all before you go, don't wait for the vital moment before trying it in the middle of nowhere in a storm in the pitch dark!I had no problems whatsoever with it, I guess it's the best product of its type on the market, and it pumps water fast - no waiting for the drip-drip-drip of some purifiers while you die of thirst. One other piece of advice...photocopy the vital bits of instructions before you do, then laminate them. Priceless in nasty conditions that would reduce the originals to pulp in less than a minute.Deep jungle or dodgy hotel room, this is the business! Check widely for prices, we paid around £80 for one including cartridge, but I've seen them up to £150-ish. Steve Riches, Northampton, UK.
